So, how did you spend your Mother’s Day? There were some great highlights to my entire weekend, but for the dramatic interest of this post, I will talk about the crappy part…and I will of course write up another post about all things wonderful!!....because really, it was a GREAT weekend overall!
Saturday morning I woke up with an ache-y pain in my side… I figured it was probably just a growing pain and my stomach stretching out to make more room for our little girl, so I didn’t pay too much attention to it….tried not to. It kind of felt like that crampy aches and pains similar to cramps, but it was constant and wasn’t sharp. Just annoying. I went on with my morning the best I could, it was our anniversary after all and I was ready for a relaxing, fun weekend with The Hubs!
I realized after I’d been crampy for a few hours, that maybe I was dehydrated, I did have 2 complimentary coffees on Friday….so I chugged 3 bottles of water (excessive? Meh.) We packed our bags and headed down to the Farmer’s Market to pick up our anniversary cake and play around a bit. All of a sudden I had this crazy sudden urge to pee… like, pull over so I can run urgency. Makes sense, I just chugged 40+ oz of water! So I ran to the bathroom and then went on with my plans. We picked up the cake, I went to the bathroom again. We walked through the Farmer’s Market, and I had to go again…all this within say 45 minutes. I chalked it all up to my water consumption and apologized to Brandon for all my sudden stops. I told him, the baby must be moving right on top of my bladder, which to me, explained the side pain AND the frequency of my visits to the John. (why do they call it John?)
We finished up our fun at the Farmer’s Market and headed out to Welches for the weekend! We made it to about Gresham and had to stop…bathroom break again, and B wanted to grab a bite to eat. Still having my side pain I texted his mom about taking Tylenol and if it’s ok. I opted not to, I hate taking medicine, but it was good to know I had options. Well without going through my every second of my day, let’s just chalk it up to me having to go pee a million times, and each time, not really producing much, but that urgency of “if I don’t find a bathroom NOW, I’m in trouble” …quite an inconvenience. Again, I chalked it up to, baby on bladder and growing pains. That night I tried going to bed but the pain got worse and I was just getting frustrated at having to get up every 20 minutes. I literally got no sleep.
Woke up on Sunday, same routine. The pain wasn’t as bad on my side, but my back started hurting…still the issue with the urgency. So I went online to the trusty Google to see if my symptoms meant anything or if it was just “part of pregnancy” ---of course there’s a million moms-to-be that post a million different things, so self-diagnosis was difficult. I told Brandon, if I didn’t feel better when we got home, I would call the doctor. We went to brunch…so good…but I had to get up 4 times to go to the bathroom! At this point I’m just getting annoyed. Especially since I’d also been trying really hard to have a great anniversary weekend and first Mother’s Day. I don’t like being an inconvenience or being uncomfortable, and I’m feeling kind of bad that I’m just not 100%.
Anyway, back pain starts increasing so we drove home with the heated seats and AC on (it was SO nice on Sunday!!). I called the Doctor once I had a chance and she encouraged me to go to the hospital as soon as I could to get some tests done, since it didn’t sound quite right…she also (I’m sure not intentionally) freaked me out talking about pre-term labor and how at 24-25 weeks the baby is barely viable on it’s own… WHAT?! How bad is this?! I was just thinking growing pains… I really don’t think its contractions! But better safe than sorry….so after stopping by the Grandparent’s to say hi and visit for a bit, we headed to the hospital.
We got there, I gave a urine sample, they asked a million questions and started thinking it was most likely a UTI, which is really common in pregnancy apparently. They also set up a monitor to track baby movement and possible contractions, so I got to hang out for about a half hour waiting for the pee results. It came back with no bacteria (rule out UTI) but with quite a bit of blood…no bueno. They decided to draw some blood and get me in the queue for an ultrasound. Blood draw stink. I’ve only met one person who can stick me on the first try. This visit was no different. Poke one, miss. Poke two – opposite arm, miss. Poke three, painful in the front of my hand, miss. The nurse, bless her heart – she was really nice – got frustrated and grabbed another gal to try. (I have wormy collapsible veins apparently). 2nd nurse comes in and gets me in original arm on another vein. I joked that I was going to get a tattoo with a little “x marks the spot” for future blood draws…it’s my standard joke for this situation. :)
They draw my blood, and we wait… and wait… and wait… and I go to the bathroom a few times more. I get a call that their ready for me for the ultrasound and I get wheeled…yes wheeled… in a HUGE wheelchair down to the ultrasound room. (It was weird not walking…I wasn’t that bad.) She checks out my kidneys, my bladder, and my kidneys again. We watched the thermal imaging and we can see my left kidney “jet” pumping urine into my bladder. (To give you a visual, it looks like the Mario Bros. game where they are in the lava level and the lava balls are shooting…quite entertaining!). We watched and waiting and my right kidney didn’t want to play the game. There was nothing shooting from the right kidney. So she checked the kidney again and told us she’d write up her report. I get wheeled back up to the room, and we wait some more. Finally the doctor calls in and tells me that they think it is most likely a kidney stone that’s hanging out in my right kidney, or a uterine stone? It sounds like it might be in its early stage and hasn’t started passing yet…which is more painful than what I’ve been dealing with… ugh. So, if it does start down its trek, we talked about doing a stint to open it up.
But, she said they’d really know a lot more once I got all the lab results back which would be in a few days. I told them I could manage with being uncomfortable until then and so now we wait...she gave me the green light to go home for the night (thankfully!) and we headed home after over 4 hours hanging out at the hospital. Good thing is that Baby Vick is ok and moving around like crazy…phew!! More news to come later, but this I suppose will be a memorable first Mom’s Day… I guess you could say I got the gift of a private preview hospital tour prior to the one I scheduled for next month!
