“It’s all little bits of history repeating…”

We’ve all had them, déjà vu moments… but really, what I’m about to share would be about as rare as lightening striking twice for anyone but me. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a teensy bit. Maybe not. But since I guess the original story is in my top favs for embarrassing moments, AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN, then it must be worth sharing. (If I have kids someday, and this is still being read, I forewarn you children, don’t read, you’ll be more embarrassed than me.)

So, a few years ago, let’s say…three years ago… I was on my lunch break for work and I was meeting by (now hubby) for lunch. He wanted KFC, I wanted Baja Fresh… so I decided to pick them both up. I was in line ordering his chicken meal and pulled up to the drive through window. I bent over to the other side of my car to grab my wallet and then sat back up and greeted the greasy teenage guy working the window. He greeted me back with a really really big smile. So naturally I’m thinking to myself, “he-ya, I must be looking good today.” He tells me it’ll be a minute for my food and then comes back with another guy who’s looking out the drive through window at me and has this big ol’ smile across his face, it was that same look. At this point, I can’t help but think that I’m looking pretty good and that my boyfriend should be so lucky, ha! So anyway, not only do I get what I ordered for FREE, but the guys load me up with a bunch of extras. Seriously. Honestly, at this point, I don’t quite understand it, but hey, have I ever turned down free food? Heck no!

So all pumped with confidence I meet up with my boyfriend, get out of the car with food in hand and he too is giving me the look. But unlike the other guys he’s more shocked, and maybe a little freaked. I flash him a big confident hot smile and he says, “what’s up with your shirt?!” As I’m walking across the busy parking lot I look down and suddenly drop all my free food….. OH MY GOSH!!! I am totally popping out of my shirt!! It all comes flooding to me. The guys at KFC, so eager to see me…. Oh my gosh, I am mortified. Here I am thinking I’m all that and having a great hair day, and no, I get free food because I’m a flasher!!! As red as the shirt I’m wearing, I button the popped button back up unsure of how it happened in the first place, clearly it wasn’t intentional! Then after an embarrassing lunch I head back to work only to find out that when I get out of my car, there I am again, exposing myself to the world! Then I put two and two together and realize my seatbelt was unfastening my loose button. Needless to say, it was a shirt I would never wear again.

Small disclaimer: when I say “flash” I don’t actually mean flash flash… I mean, flash as in undergarments exposed….still as embarrassing for me.

So…now don’t forget that this was a déjà vu blog….meaning, yes, put it together, it happened again!!! And not with the same shirt, mind you, that one is in the garbage along with the preggers shirt from before.

This morning I get out of my car with hands full of various things, purse, keys, jacket, breakfast and water bottle and I head to the door. We have couriers who come in daily and deliver items to and from the bank. One of the gentlemen was waiting at the door so that I could let him in and I hurried across the parking lot. (let me back up a moment) – Before I head out of the car I see something fall, I assume out of my purse, and I don’t really pay any attention to it, but I do notice)…okay, so back to the walk in to work…. I’m feeling a little breezy so I look down, and sure enough, no joke, there I am popping out of my work shirt again! And get this… it is with the same freakin’ bra as before, coincidence, I think not! Freaked, I try and cover myself up, since courier dude is waiting for me to let him in…and he’s staring…. Oh my gosh, did he see me or did he just see my spasmatic freak out with all of my stuff falling out of my hands and onto the pavement? Regardless, he saw something and he looked a little concerned. So I gather my things off the ground, and try to sneakily rebutton my shirt…but there’s no button!! Great… I can’t keep stalling, I have to let him in! So I shove all of my stuff in front of my chest and waddle to the door. Of course he asks if everything is alright, and I laugh and tell him that I’m just clumsy (true!).

I immediately ask the other girls if they have a safety pin, because come on, it’s kind of obvious, and I live across town and can’t really go get a change of shirt. No safety pins to be found… I must find this stinking button!! So I hold my shirt together and go back in search of this button. First stop…the parking lot…oh, and it’s a small dark brown button, of course it couldn’t be red, or white, or turquoise! I can’t find it anywhere (oh and the bank is open so we have clients coming in and out, and they probably think I am crazy! (if they didn’t think so before)… next stop. The car. I open the door, and remember, oh yeah! I did see something fall…what if…. And sure enough there is my button!!! Hallejulah!!! It’s lodged in between my E-brake and my seat…no problem, I shove my sausagey fingers with no nails into the crack (I know I know, I should quite biting them!) hmm…this may be more difficult…if I only had fingernails…. Bah! And then it happened….in slow motion….my big ol sausagey fingers push the button right into the hole of where the e-brake is…..NOOO!!!!.......the black hole….there was no way for me to get it…and it was right there in eyesight!! Of course. Of course this would happen to me. This is one of those Darci moments. What to do, I have no button, I have no safety pin, I have an exposed chest that clearly is not professional and we don’t have the coverage at work for me to leave….so after a small pouting session in my car, I regain my composure and get all McGuyver. I cut a button off my sleeve, take a paperclip, thread the button through the paperclip and then staple the paper clip to the other side of my shirt and rebutton the button. Had it not been for the ruffles on my shirt, by craftsmanship may have looked a little tacky, but I cleverly hid the office supplies behind the ruffles. It worked for about 10 minutes. Then the staple came off. After about 3 hours of re-stapling my shirt, I decided it was necessary to take my lunch and buy a new shirt. With no buttons.

For those who know me, you know that although these are two mortifying moments… I can’t help but smile thinking that I am so “busty” I can’t keep it in my shirt! Ha. Right….

Resolutions for Kindness

New Year’s. We all make resolutions right? I always say, I’m going to lose weight, drink more water, etc… well that works for about a week. And I know that I’m not the only one. So it’s a secret goal this year, if it happens, AWESOME, if not, meh, it wasn’t a real goal. Instead I made some easily attainable goals that can benefit others too, I hope.

Goal One: Keep track of the details in my life, which would be those little stories, the memories, the whole reason I started this thing to begin with…so I guess I need to get on that since I’m behind already! …hold me accountable… I want to do a recap 2009 and all the ideas are in my head, I just need to get them out! Coming soon…

Goal Two: Get my thank you cards out. On time will be an added bonus. I don’t know why it seems to be so stinkin’ difficult, it takes all of about a minute, and I know I always get a smile on my face when I get one; it makes my day when I get fun mail. Why not make someone else’s day? So yeah, not that I’m already behind on that too…but I need to get them out for Christmas… J

Which leads me to Goal Three: Random Acts of Kindness. And I am actually up do date on this one, as I did it this morning. I’ve been thinking a lot of how I can make a difference in the everyday. It would have been my resolution – to make a difference in someone’s life, each and everyday – whether it be with a smile, a compliment, a laugh, or helping someone in need. Since I couldn’t figure out a way to measure that (and goal’s need to be measurable you know!) I thought I would make an attainable and measurable goal (RAoK) but then also continue to do the day to days…

This morning, I went to get my no foam latte J and the line was horrendous! Everyone must have woken up heavy eyed like me… and I’m pretty sure people were stressing out, especially since I got cut off on my way to the drive through…anyway, I decided that it would be a perfect opportunity to make someone’s day just a little better… when I got up to pay for my drink, I went ahead and picked up the gal behind me’s drink. I know she got a Venti Americano with whip cream – I overheard her order…so, to the lady in the blue car, sipping your Americano, I hope you’re day just got a little better. It was simple, and it was only $2. So that’s my goal. Once a month, at least, just to do a little something special for someone. Who knows, maybe like the movie, it will spur a world of change, and I can say I solved world peace! Ha, well…again, SMART goals… specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. I don’t know if world peace qualifies yet.

Happy New Year’s – here’s to some kindness!
